Transfer Ladle

A transfer ladle is a large, custom-designed metallic vessel used in the iron, steel, and metal casting industries to safely and controllably transport molten (liquid) metal from one stage of the production process (e.g., a melting furnace or induction furnace) to the next (e.g., a casting machine or subsequent processing stations).

Key Functions and Characteristics:

• Thermal Insulation (Refractory Lining): The most critical feature is the internal lining with refractory bricks or specialized thermal insulation materials. This lining is essential for withstanding the extreme heat of the liquid metal and ensuring the metal loses the least amount of heat possible during transfer. This prevents the metal from freezing or experiencing viscosity issues.

• Transfer: The primary purpose is to move the molten metal between the furnace and the casting area, typically assisted by overhead cranes, ladle cars, or specialized forklift attachments.

• Tapping and Pouring: The ladle is equipped with a mechanism for controlled metal discharge, either through a sliding gate system at the bottom or a pouring spout (lipping spout) along the side.

• Secondary Metallurgy (Optional): Some transfer ladles are specifically designed to allow for minor alloy additions or treatment processes (secondary metallurgy) during the transfer to refine the metal's quality. For instance, they might include a treatment pocket for magnesium treatment in ductile iron production.
