Description

TMFFA-03-E is a 300 kg electrically heated, hydraulically tilted crucible furnace we designed for melting aluminium and its alloys. We design the furnace from the crucible outwards: chamber size, heating element layout and insulation thickness follow the real dimensions of the crucible. This model is built around a TP 412 (Vesuvius BU K 350) class crucible with pouring spout.

Heating layout: hexagonal chamber, 3 tiers

The chamber is a hexagonal platform. The wall on the tap-out side carries the crucible support brick and has no heating elements, as protection against metal overflow. The other 5 walls each carry heating blocks in 3 tiers; each tier is one phase of 5 blocks in series, so the bottom, middle and top of the crucible heat evenly. The tier ends are joined in star with a heavy copper bar.

Easy maintenance

Block-to-block links are flexible bars outside the insulation. A failed block is removed and replaced on its own, without dismantling the insulation.

Tilting and pouring

Tilting is hydraulic up to 95°, with the tilting axis at the tap-out, so the pouring point does not move while tilting. The hydraulic unit has a hand pump, so the furnace can be tilted and emptied manually during a power cut. The operator reaches the crucible safely from a platform and stairs.

Safety

If the crucible cracks, molten metal escapes before reaching the heating elements: the floor refractory slopes to a drain opening closed by a hinged flap that opens under the metal, which then flows into a tray under the frame. Besides the control thermocouple the chamber has a separate over-temperature (limit) thermocouple; metal temperature is measured with an L-type thermocouple.
