Liquid metal transfer vehicles are specialized equipment designed to safely and efficiently transport molten metal, which is at extremely high temperatures, from one location to another. These vehicles are an integral part of production processes in foundries, steel mills, and other metal processing facilities.

Key Functions:

• Safe Transportation: Due to the extremely high temperatures of molten metal, these vehicles are made from special heat-resistant materials. They ensure worker safety by preventing splashes or spills of the metal.

• Temperature Control: They utilize insulated structures to minimize heat loss from the metal during transfer. Some advanced systems may also include heating mechanisms to maintain or adjust the temperature during transit.

• Efficient Flow: Designed to control the flow of metal and precisely pour the correct amount into the designated location. This improves casting quality and efficiency.

• Variety: Different types exist depending on the application and the volume of metal to be transported:

  • Ladles: Typically moved by cranes or special carriers, these are often scoop-shaped containers. They come in various sizes, from small to large.

  • Transfer Tundishes: Used in processes like continuous casting to transfer molten metal from a ladle to a mold or another intermediate reservoir.

  • Transfer Launders: Fixed or inclined channels used to transfer molten metal, usually by gravity, from a furnace or holding furnace to another furnace or casting station.

  • Automated Transport Systems: In modern facilities, robotic systems that can move autonomously along a defined path (rail-bound or free-roaming) are also employed.

Materials and Construction:

These vehicles typically consist of steel shells lined with refractory materials such as high-alumina, magnesia, or chamotte. The refractory lining provides protection against the corrosive and high-temperature effects of the molten metal.
