Tilting, Stationary or Rotary Furnace: Which Type for Which Job?

Aluminium melting furnaces differ not only in capacity and energy source but also in how they hold and discharge the metal. The right type depends on your casting method, batch size and scrap/ingot ratio.
Stationary crucible furnace
The crucible is fixed and metal is taken out with a ladle. Simple design, low investment and easy maintenance make it common for gravity casting, small die-casting cells and job-shop production, typically from a few hundred kilograms up to 1 tonne. Ladling can increase operator workload and temperature loss with larger batches.
Example: SMFFA stationary furnaces (150–1000 kg, electric/gas).
Tilting crucible furnace
The furnace body tilts on a hydraulic or mechanical mechanism and pours directly into a transfer ladle or launder. Large amounts of metal are transferred quickly and in a controlled way without ladling, improving both safety and productivity. Suitable for plants that melt centrally and distribute metal to several casting stations.
Example: TMFFA tilting crucible furnaces (500–1000 kg).
Rotary tilting furnace
A cylindrical body rotates about its axis and tilts for pouring. Rotation stirs the charge and improves heat transfer, making it efficient for mixed charges such as scrap, chips and dross recovery. Typically multi-tonne and fired by gas or oxy-fuel burners — the standard solution in recycling and secondary aluminium.
Example: RTMFFA rotary tilting furnaces (1–24 tonnes).
Reverberatory furnace
Flame and hot gases above a wide, shallow hearth radiate heat from the roof and walls onto the metal. Used for continuous melting and alloying at very large capacities (tens of tonnes), often together with casting houses and extrusion billet casting.
Example: RMFFA reverberatory furnaces.
Which one suits you?
- Small–medium batches, ladle casting: stationary crucible furnace.
- Medium batches, fast transfer to ladles: tilting crucible furnace.
- Scrap-heavy, large batches, recovery: rotary tilting furnace.
- Continuous, very large volume, alloying: reverberatory furnace.
After melting, molten-metal transfer equipment and degassing units complete the line.
