How to Extend Crucible Life: From First Heat-Up to Daily Cleaning

In crucible furnaces the crucible is both the most critical and the most frequently replaced consumable. A crucible that cracks early means not only cost but also a risk of molten-metal run-out. The good news: most factors that decide crucible life are under the plant's control.

Note: every crucible manufacturer has its own first-heating and operating instructions. The points below are general principles and do not replace them.

1. Storage and handling

Crucibles are sensitive to moisture. Store them dry and off the floor. Avoid knocks and rolling during handling; an invisible crack can grow on first heating.

2. Correct installation

The crucible should sit on a base block of suitable height and material, with equal clearance to the furnace walls. A level, correctly sized base is important for even heating. Material packed tightly between crucible and wall creates stress during thermal expansion.

3. First heating (curing)

New crucibles must be heated slowly and in steps to drive out moisture and form the protective glaze. Rushing to full power can cause cracks and spalling through steam pressure and thermal shock. Do the first heating with an empty crucible following the manufacturer's temperature–time curve.

4. Charging

  • Do not wedge ingots vertically into the crucible; expanding metal pushes against the walls.
  • Place heavy pieces without dropping them, ideally on a bed of smaller pieces.
  • Never add cold, wet material to molten metal — it causes both explosion risk and thermal shock. Preheat it.

5. Temperature management

Running hotter than necessary accelerates oxidation of the crucible material. Do not leave an empty crucible at high temperature for long. Set the operating temperature to what the process actually needs and check thermocouple calibration regularly.

6. Cleaning

Oxide and dross build-up on the walls reduces heat transfer and crucible volume. Clean regularly while hot, using suitable scrapers without damaging the surface. Make sure fluxes are compatible with the crucible material; some fluxes attack the crucible chemically.

7. Regular inspection

Check the crucible visually at the start of every shift: cracks, thinning, spalling and discolouration of the outer surface are warning signs. A clear reduction in wall thickness means it is time to replace it. A run-out detection system in the furnace floor adds extra safety.
