Furnace Insulation and Energy Efficiency: Where Does the Heat Go?
By OEM FURNACE Mühendislik - 13/10/2026 - 0 comments
One of the biggest factors in a furnace's energy bill is how much of the heat it produces goes into the product and how much is lost to the surroundings. A hot outer casing on an old or worn furnace shows that part of the energy is simply heating the workshop.
Where does the heat go?
- Walls, roof and floor: conduction through insufficient or damaged insulation.
- Doors and lids: opening time and seal condition; radiation through an open lid is very large.
- Flue gas (fuel-fired furnaces): heat leaving with hot exhaust; partly recoverable by preheating combustion air with a recuperator.
- Thermal bridges: metal parts, anchors and penetrations passing through the insulation.
- Stored heat: in batch furnaces, the refractory must be reheated every cycle.
Insulation materials
Firebrick and castables: high mechanical strength and resistance to molten metal; used on the hot face and in areas of wear and metal contact. High heat storage.
Insulating firebrick: lighter and porous; reduces losses as a second layer behind dense refractory.
Ceramic fibre (blanket, board, modules): very light with low heat storage, giving fast heat-up and energy savings in batch furnaces that are opened often. Selected by classification temperature (e.g. 1260 °C, 1430 °C). Use dust masks and protective equipment during installation and removal.
Microporous boards: very low thermal conductivity for a given thickness; effective as back-up insulation where space is limited.
Good designs usually combine them: a durable hot face backed by layers with high thermal resistance.
Practical saving tips
- Measure casing temperature periodically with a thermal camera or surface thermometer; hot spots reveal insulation damage.
- Check door and lid seals and cut unnecessary opening time.
- Make lid use standard practice on crucible furnaces.
- Have burner air/gas ratios adjusted regularly on fuel-fired furnaces.
- Do not run hotter than the product requires; review holding temperatures.
- When relining is due, reconsider the whole insulation build-up, not just the damaged area.
